- Tribal Woman Sheds Tears Outside Bank
Bankers Mistake: In a shocking incident in Sirikonda of Adilabad district, Telangana Grameena Bank officials reportedly adjusted funds from the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme towards a pending crop loan without the beneficiary’s consent. The incident has left a tribal woman, Sombai, distressed and humiliated.
Sombai, a resident of Lachimpur village in Sirikonda mandal, had borrowed money last year to arrange her daughter’s marriage. She was hoping to repay the debt using the financial aid provided under the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme.
However, when the funds were deposited into her bank account, officials from Telangana Grameena Bank adjusted the amount against a crop loan she had taken two years ago. The loan, which was initially ₹1.60 lakh, had accrued to ₹2.20 lakh, including interest.
Unaware of the requirement to renew her crop loan, Sombai said no one had informed her about the process. Overwhelmed by the situation, she sat outside the bank, weeping inconsolably.
Villagers expressed their outrage, pointing out the lack of awareness and sensitivity among the bank staff. They criticized the officials for failing to consider Sombai’s plight, despite being aware of her situation.
This incident highlights the need for better financial literacy programs, especially for tribal communities. It also calls for stricter oversight of government schemes to ensure that beneficiaries receive their rightful assistance without undue interference.
Local residents are urging the authorities to take immediate action against the bank officials involved and ensure justice for Sombai. The incident has also sparked a demand for more awareness initiatives to empower tribal women and safeguard their rights.
